Ready… Steady…….. Go Go Go!!!

I write to you having not long arrived home from a “close shift” at work. A steadyish shift really, but I find close shifts most difficult to prepare my body clock for. 7pm to start work gives me a dilemma, I tend to have to have a ‘lazy day’ to reserve myself the energy to survive the late 11pm ringing of the bell!

But, in waking up at 8am then makes a 10hr lazy day a total waste!

Arriving home after the clock has struck 12 is then the time when I can finally lose the 100% concentration, of all the processes and procedures. I even find the use of the calculator stressful! (My Long-hand Mathematics is almost never wrong, and on the odd occasion that the figures don’t add up, a quick bit of detective work, and the mistake will either stand out, or often prove, that it’s rarely my mathematics!!) I find the calculator is a quick and lazy way of getting out the door quicker. But if there’s a problem… It could be anything!!

It’s not just church music that I’m an old fashioned cynic!

In churches, we are at the end of Eastertide, and heading through the festivals of Ascension, Pentecost, Corpus Christi and Trinity Sunday.

For Ascension, we sang William Croft’s God is gone up, maybe not quite at the pace that would be in my brain, but nonetheless, a terrific anthem. There are soo many!

This Sunday, Chris, our fantastic organist in Weston Favell, is away on his holibobs, and I am delighted to be playing the organ for the 10 o’clock. I have some intriguing pieces to play, and have selected a Voluntary in A, (Selby) a Fuguetta (Kittel) and, neatly finishing of with Processional (Mathias) .

At home, I’ve done a few numbers, including a hilariously terrible crack at God is gone up, a double up on Hyfrydol, and, Finally! After a lot of practice, and quite a few “Scatterings of the Proud” I managed a sing of Herbert Sumsion’s Evening Setting in A Major that many of you have enjoyed listening to!

I shall be missing from Choral Evensong this time round, This is most appropriate!!!

I will instead be preparing for THE BIG HYMN SING. Which I am hosting at St Andrew’s Wellingborough.

My diary has suddenly gone from not a lot, to go go go!

I don’t think I’ve a week off until Mid-August with one thing and another. Work, we are significantly short staffed. Church services and events. And when it’s not that, I’ll be winding down by trying to make all the many Beer Festivals that are on!!

Yikes!!

Now I just need some sleep!!! Wish me luck!
