The Day of Pentecost Came

Yes, It’s THAT reading from The book of Acts that Churchwardens must ensure that the person designated to read the Lesson is present in church! And here’s why…

Many years ago, I took my first ever organist post. And I read the lesson a couple of times previously; but only ever a little reading, with no big words!

Pentecost Sunday came, we sang the Gloria, the Collect was read, and we were invited to sit for the First Reading. Everyone sat down, and nobody came forward… So, clever, thoughtful, and quick thinking me lept from the organ stool, and went to the lectern.

Oh what a mistake that was!

I don’t do big words!!

Every time I got to a word that I couldn’t read, I’d look up gingerly and ashamed, for someone to mouth the word to me!

I think this occasion became an “Audience participation”

As I closed with “This is the word of the Lord” with so much confidence that the relief that it was over, the congregation did chuckle in appreciation!

I have never volunteered my services to “The Reading Rota” since!

In 2024, I was on the organ at St Peter’s. This year, Canon Beverley read the Act’s reading!

Maybe this should be “A thing?” Just like at a Traditional Carol service. The Priest always reads from John’s Gospel!

I wonder how many Curate’s would agree with this suggestion as there’s also a thing, that Trinity Sunday is often known as “Get the Curate to Preach - Sunday”

Before the service I played through a few pieces, but in a different order to what I normally do!

Hymns included Christians Lift up your Hearts, Spirit of God as strong as the wind, Be Still for the Presence of the Lord, and Gracious Spirit Holy Ghost.

I enjoyed some extra notes for the last verse of Skye Boat Song, and I wrote a Last Verse arrangement for the Last Hymn.

Always a pleasure to make music at St Peter’s Weston Favell.

I love doing it!

I say this at the time that I have turned down the Third opportunity to take up a Director of Music post.

Since then, I have been extremely busy at work, and at Beer Festivals.

And… THE BIG HYMN SING
